Personal Injury Protection

For many people today, a personal injury protection policy has become something they consider necessary when driving in their everyday lives. When you have other responsibilities, especially of a financial nature then this is no longer an option. While some people take out personal injury protection (PIP) just for their own benefit, most health insurance policies can incorporate this as an add-on. Unfortunately, this can be an expensive insurance policy to have and many families cannot justify the monthly expense when it is usually they who are most at risk.

It is often the case that it was arranged without the full range of cover looked at so may be inappropriate to the needs of the customer. Throughout most parts of America today, injury insurance has become required by law but the cover required seems to vary considerably from state to state. The figures for this show massive variations with people living in Florida on requiring one tenth the amount that citizens in Alaska do. So even if you are fortunate to reside in a state where personal injury protection is not presently a legal requirement, it might be worth considering it for the future.

A large amount is paid out against these plans for the insured and any person traveling with them, up to four fifths of the costs. As a no fault policy though, the plan pays for loss of earnings, medical expenses and various other costs for the policy holder and his passengers even if the insured was responsible for the situation. As there can be considerable costs involved with purchasing this type of cover it is worth looking carefully at any current insurance policies you have to see if any of those areas are already catered for; which could lower the amount of protection cover you would need if you took out a new plan. It is quite common for certain aspects like hospital bills and possibly a percentage of lost income to be covered by a family health insurance policy.

If this is the case, then you may need minimal amount of coverage or even none at all. How you drive will also help determine whether or not you need personal injury protection. If you carry passengers on a regular basis your health insurance might cover your own medical expenses, it won't however, cover those of your passengers (unless they are members of your family who are on your health plan). So if your personal injury protection policy does not cover your passengers, it is your responsibility to ensure they are protected.

It is the responsibility of the driver (or other insured party) to look after the safety of their passengers, whoever they may be. Although you may feel fortunate if you reside in a state that does not require personal injury protection by law, that should not stop you from obtaining it for your own peace of mind. There are many factors involved in how much your personal injury cover may cost including; age, driving experience and driving record plus your health and any existing insurance policies you have. Accidents unfortunately happen but before you rush into buying insurance cover, look into the subject as it could save you some money but more importantly will make you feel more secure when you drive with passengers.
